Biofluid mechanics is a branch of science that deals with fluid mechanics in living organisms. Progress in biofluid mechanics has led to extraordinary advancements in biology, including the development of the artificial hearts, heart valves, stents, and more. This new and expanded edition of Biofluid Dynamics of Human Body Systems is a comprehensive guide on the physical and chemical properties of fluids in the human body, covering the circulatory, respiratory, brain, urinary, digestive, and maternal fetal systems.
Offering a complete presentation of the physics and applications of bioheat and biofluid transport in the human body and organ systems, this volume also illustrates the necessary methodology and physics associated with the mathematical modeling of heat and mass exchange in our body. It discusses applications of dimensional analysis in bioengineering as well as bioheat and biomass transfer in the human body.
Megh R. Goyal, PhD, PE, is a Retired Professor in Agricultural and Biomedical Engineering from the General Engineering Department in the College of Engineering at the University of Puerto Rico–Mayaguez Campus. He has worked as a Soil Conservation Inspector and as a Research Assistant at Haryana Agricultural University and Ohio State University. He was the first agricultural engineer to receive the professional license in Agricultural Engineering from the College of Engineers and Surveyors of Puerto Rico and was proclaimed as the “Father of Irrigation Engineering in Puerto Rico for the twentieth century” by the ASABE, Puerto Rico Section, for his pioneering work on micro irrigation, evapotranspiration, agroclimatology, and soil and water engineering. During his professional career of over 53 years, he has received many prestigious awards. A prolific author and editor, he has written more than 200 journal articles and several textbooks and has edited over 100 books. Arka Bhomik, PhD, is a mechanical/biomedical engineer and is currently working as a Research Associate in the Department of Radiology at the Evelyn H. Lauder Breast Center at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, New York, USA. He formerly worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the School of Medical Science and Technology at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India, and at the University of California, Los Angeles (USA). He was also an adhoc faculty in mechanical engineering at the National Institute of Technology Calicut, Kerala, India. Since 2010, he has carried out scientific research in applications of mechanical engineering in biological systems, such as radiative bioheat transfer, mathematical modeling of heat and mass transfer, design and optimization of photobioreactor for microalgae biomass production, development of medical devices for diagnosis and therapy of diseases, planning models for treatment of superficial and deep microwave hyperthermia, and microfluidics. His primary interest is in developing a fundamental understanding of the light and heat transport process in healthy and diseased biological cells and tissues and to articulate the acquired knowledge for development of medical tools and performance of such tools for diseases diagnosis and therapy. He has been awarded as an outstanding reviewer by three flagship journals, and one of his research projects has earned him a best paper award at an international conference. He has to his credit 11 research articles in international journals, one invited editorial, two Indian patents, and a book chapter. Anamika Chauhan, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Home Science at Chanam Lal Madhavidhyalya Haridwar, Sri Dev Suman University, Uttarakhand, India, where she is also a member of the Board of Studies. She is UGC-NET, USET, MPhil (Home Science) qualified. She was awarded a Young Scientist Award by the Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology and a Teacher’s Excellence Award by Motherhood University, Uttarakhand, as well as a Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Global Educator Award (2022) by the International Council for Education, Research and Training. She holds one patent (“Gold Nanoparticles with Albizia L Ebbeckl. Benth Leaves Extract for Dermal Cancer”) to her credit. She is a lifetime member of the Indian Science Congress Association Kolkata, Scientific and Technical Research Association (STRA), and Home Science Association of India. She has published several research papers in peer-reviewed national and international journals, eight edited books, and a textbook. She has also been associated with workshops and conferences. Her research interest and areas range across the right to education, nutrition, and human health. Dr. Chauhan obtained her master’s degree and PhD from HNB Garhwal Srinagar, Central University, Uttarakhand, India. She also has a master’s degree in English, Education, and Political Science.
