This book covers planning and maintenance of digital power line carrier (DPLC) channels along high voltage 35-750 kV alternate current power lines, providing readers with an introduction to the relevant industry standards, structure, and construction of DPLC equipment. Coverage includes DPLC equipment use in digital transmitting systems, including digital modulation and coding, channel equalization, and echo cancelling; DPLC multiplexing systems and network elements; different characteristics of high voltage power lines as media for high frequency PLC signals transmission; and planning of DPLC channels. Practicing engineers and researchers involved in the development, design, and application of high voltage power line carrier channels, as well as students studying communications and electric power grids, will find this book to be a valuable reference guide.

Anton G. Merkulov, PhD, SMIEEE, is lead of the PLC research team at the Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications, Almaty, Kazakhstan. Dr. Merkulov has more than 12 years of experience in telecommunications for power grid companies, and is the author of two books (in Russian) and more than 30 papers about high voltage PLC/DPLC. He is a member of the Work Group RG2 'Telecommunications for Power Grids' of the Russian National CIGRE Study Committee D2.

Yuri P. Shkarin, PhD, has developed a theoretical basement for calculation of parameters that determine the conditions of waves propagation along high voltage electric power transmission lines. Applied to power line carrier communications these parameters are HF path attenuation, group time delay, input impedance, return loss. The study of waves propagation processes along non-homogeneous multiconductor power lines and development of calculation methods have been carried out using modal theory, theory of matrices and theory of multiple grids.

Dr. Shkarin pays great attention to experimental testing of the results of theoretical studies. He developed a way to measure the modal parameters of multiconductor power lines by open and short circuit method. The experimental determination of HF paths frequency characteristics along electrical power lines with voltage class from 110 up to 1150 kV and modal parameters of these paths has been carried out with his direct participation.

Together with A.A. Filippov developed special software WinTrakt and WinNoise for calculation of HF paths parameters for power line carrier channels. These programs are used worldwide in such global companies as Siemens AG, ABB, General Electric, and the Israel Power Grid Company, as well as throughout Russia and Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries.

Dr. Shkarin is author and co-author of 7 books (in Russian) and more than 90 articles about high voltage PLC. Most of the research was conducted by Dr. Shkarin from 1960s to 2000s. He is 90 years old and continues to work as a consultant at the Research and Design Institute 'Energosetproject' in Moscow, Russia.

Sergey E. Romanov is Head of R&D with Unitel Engineering LLC, Moscow, Russia. Mr. Romanov has more than 25 years of experience in calculation, construction, and deployment of different types of PLC/DPLC equipment and channels for voice, data, and teleprotection. He is a member of the Work Group RG2 'Telecommunications for Power Grids' of the Russian National CIGRE Study Committee D2.

Vasiliy A. Kharlamov, PhD, is Deputy CTO of Unitel Engineering LLC, Moscow, Russia. Dr. Kharlamov has more than 20 years of experience in calculation, construction, and deployment of different types of PLC channels for voice, data and teleprotection. He is lead author of Russian standards regarding PLC and digital teleprotection equipment, including the Russian IEC 61850 profile for teleprotection equipment and its implementation. He is Head of the Work Group RG2 'Telecommunications for Power Grids' of the Russian National CIGRE Study Committee D2.

Yuri V. Nazarov, PhD, is Deputy CEO of NPF Modem LLC, Saint Petersburg, Russia. Dr. Nazarov has more than 20 years of experience in design and certification of the PLC equipment. He is an International Electrotechnical Commission expert working group TC57/WG20 that develops standards IEC 62488 that are related to power line carrier communications.
