This Brief introduces SuperParamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (SPIONs), the different synthesis approaches, their applications in the field of diagnostics and treatment and finally as theranostic agents in cancer.

Ms. Atefeh Zarepour received her B.S. in genetic engineering in 2011 and her M.S. degree in Nanobiotechnology in 2014 from University of Isfahan. She is currently a Ph.D. student under the guidance of Prof. Ali Zarrabi in Nanobiotechnology at University of Isfahan. Her researches are focused on SPIONs and Graphene Oxide, their surface modification with different biocompatible polymers to regulate the biological properties of nanoparticles and nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems and their applications as nano-theranostics. Dr. Ali Zarrabi received his Ph.D. from Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, in Chemical Engineering. In 2011, he joined the Department of Biotechnology, University of Isfahan, as an Assistant Professor. His current research interests include Nanobiotechnology, Nanomedicine, Drug Delivery Systems, Nanomaterials, SPIONs and Surface Modifications. Dr. Zarrabi has been a member of American Chemical Society (ACS), British Society for Nanomedicine, European Society for Nanomedicine, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Nanotechnology Strategic Committee, University of Isfahan, Biotechnology Strategic Committee, University of Isfahan, Talented Students Committee, University of Isfahan, Iranian Genetic Society and Iran Nanotechnology Initiative. Dr. Arezoo Khosravi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Islamic Azad University of Khomeinishahr in Isfahan, Iran. She completed her Ph.D. of nanotechnology at Sharif University of Technology and her M.Sc. study at Tarbiat Modares University. Her research interests lie in the area of the nanomaterial synthesis and their applications in several fields such as bio-processes, drug delivery, oil and petroleum engineering and also energy conversion.
