Recent studies on diverse aspects of the biology of clitellate works (oligochaetes and leeches) are found in the Proceedings of the most recent International Symposium on Aquatic Oligochaete Biology - from development to population dynamics and from ultrastructure to evolution. The majority of the contributions, which have a very broad geographic scope, are investigations of the biology and ecology of oligochaete works in natural and polluted waters.

Taxonomy and geographic distribution.- Tenagodrilus musculus, a new genus and species of Lumbriculidae (Clitellata) from a temporary pond in Alabama, USA.- Kathrynella, a new oligochaete genus from Guyana.- Oligochaetes (Naididae, Tubificidae, Opistocystidae, Enchytraeidae, Sparganophilidae and Alluroididae) of Guyana.- Species separation and identification in the Enchytraeidae (Oligochaeta, Annelida): combining morphology with general protein data.- Distribution, abundance and habitat types.- Aquatic Oligochaeta in Italy, with special reference to Naididae.- The distribution of Oligochaeta on an exposed rocky shore in southeast Ireland.- Oligochaeta and Aphanoneura in ancient lakes: a review.- Distribution patterns of aquatic oligochaetes inhabiting watercourses in the Northwestern Iberian Peninsula.- The effect of water movement on the distribution of Oligochaeta in lakes.- Oligochaeta of Lake Taimyr: a preliminary survey.- Influence of grain size on the distribution of tubificid oligochaete species.- Oligochaetes in the southern basin of the Venetian Lagoon: community composition, species abundance and biomass.- Population dynamics.- Seasonal dynamics of aufwuchs Naididae (Oligochaeta) on Phragmites australis in a eutrophic lake.- Age, stage and size structure as population state variables for Tubifex tubifex (Oligochaeta, Tubificidae).- Energy budget of Oligochaeta and its relationship with the primary production of Lake Sevan, Armenia.- Production and population dynamics of Tubifex tubifex in the profundal zone of a freshwater reservoir in N. Italy.- Pollution studies.- Superficial and hyporheic oligochaete communities as indicators of pollution and water exchange in the River Moselle, France.- Reversal of eutrophication in four Swiss lakes: evidence from oligochaete communities.- A comparison of two tubificid oligochaete species as candidates for sublethal bioassay tests relevant to subtropical and tropical regions.- Oligochaetes and eutrophication; an experiment over four years in outdoor mesocosms.- Oligochaete communities at the mouth of the Neva and their relationship to anthropogenic impact.- Upstream-downstream movement of macrofauna (with special reference to oligochaetes) in the River Raba below a reservoir.- A comparison of reproduction, growth and acute toxicity in two populations of Tubifex tubifex (Müller, 1774) from the North American Great Lakes and Northern Spain.- Histology and ultrastructure.- Morphogenesis of helical fibers in haplotaxids.- Histochemical characterization of secretions in the reproductive systems of two species of branchiobdellidans (Annelida: Clitellata): a new character for the phylogenetic matrix?.- An ultrastructural investigation of Hrabeiella Pižl & Chalupský, 1984 (Annelida). I. Chaetae and body wall organization.- Peripheral vascular apparatus in some aquatic oligochaetes with special references to haplotaxids.- Development and physiology.- Osmoregulation in two aquatic oligochaetes from habitats with different salinity and comparison to other annelids.- Cinematographic documentation of enchytraeid morphology and reproductive biology.- The first two cleavages in Tubifex involve distinct mechanisms to generate asymmetry in mitotic apparatus.- Systematics and evolution.- Leeches (Oligochaeta?: Euhirudinea), their phylogeny and the evolution of life-history strategies.
