He is the author of several books, including Arkansas's Gilded Age: The Rise, Decline, and Legacy of Populism and Working-Class Protest. Keri Leigh Merritt, an independent scholar in Atlanta, Georgia, is the author of Masterless Men: Poor Whites and Slavery in the Antebellum South.
