Seminar paper from the year 2020 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Far East, grade: AA, Bosporus University (Asian Studies), course: History of Japan's International Relations and Foreign Policy, language: English, abstract: The present research demonstrates that Japan's energy security dictates its Middle Eastern policy. While dealing with regional conflicts and U.S. demands, Tokyo has faced several political obstacles in establishing close ties with the countries in the region. The Tokyo government, however, from the Islamic Revolution in Iran onward, evolved a strategy that helped it to bypass sanctions so as not to collide with Washington s interests. Competition with China, as well as U.S concerns about Chinese expansionism within the Middle East, gave Tokyo an advantage to maintain trade with the Islamic Republic. Furthermore, Tokyo not only functioned as an intermediary between Washington and Tehran, but it also gained decades of expertise in dealing with Iranian crude oil imports despite sanctions, through which European countries wish to learn.Firstly, Japan's urgent need for energy, its diversification strategy for resources, as well as its main fuel suppliers, will be examined by using mainly statistical data. Secondly, the present paper will shed light on Tokyo's bypass strategy. Therefore, the ambiguous situation Tokyo found itself in, between its energy security on the one hand, and on the other hand, the U.S. - its most important ally - will be discussed. Iran constitutes the center of this issue. Hence, the chapter focuses majorly on it. Subchapters of the Iranian Dilemma section will debate China's expansionist activities, as well as Abe's Middle Eastern policy, in the light of uprising conflicts. Therefore, adopted recourses are news reports, interviews, speeches, statistical data, books based. Finally, a short conclusion will emphasize the importance of the Middle Eastern policy to Japan's energy security.
