Contains details of over 1400 species of fish, crustaceans, molluscs, seaweeds and other fishery products which are landed for commercial purposes worldwide. For each entry, the following information is given: reference number, scientific name, family name and its name in nine different languages.
World-wide, there are over 1,400 species of commercially important fish, shellfish and aquatic plants. The names of these species can vary significantly between neighbouring regions of a country, from its size, from the stage in its life cycle, from the season of the year, and from its degree of treatment after capture. The possibilities for confusion are enormous - indeed, even at a level of international debate it has, on occasion, become obvious that delegates using the same language have been talking about different species. In recognition of this problem, the CEC has developed the Multilingual Illustrated Dictionary of Aquatic Animals and Plants which is Co-published with Fishing News Books. Developed from an original listing supplied by the FAO and a Working Group of fisheries experts convened by the EC Commission, the Dictionary contains information (with illustrations) for over 1400 species of fish, crustaceans, molluscs, seaweed's, and other fishery products which are landed for commercial purposes world-wide.
For each entry, the following information is given: Reference number (the number given to the species within the index); Scienter ic (Latin) name; Family name; French name; German name; Italian name; English name; Dutch name; Danish name; Spanish name; Portuguese name-, Greek name. Every organism Is illustrated. A listing of translations of general terms used in reference to fish and other aquatic animals and plants is given within the Appendix. This new addition to the Fishing News Books series is an essential reference for all involved in the commercial fishing industries within and beyond the boundaries of the European Community.
