With over 450 photographs, showing more than 1000 toy ships, this richly illustrated book covers the whole range of its subject: from the most expensive hand-painted tin masterpieces to the cheapest wooden creations. It is true to say that toys reflect their times. Indeed, the development of great warships and ocean liners from the late 19th century into the twentieth century is shown through Dick Claus' collection of toy ships. Through catalogue research and close inspection of the actual toys, this book aims to place these fascinating antique pieces in their historical context.

Richard T. Claus has been an enthusiastic toy collector ever since receiving his first childhood train set. For the past 30 years his particular interest has revolved around toy boats and ships At one time collecting avidly: if the toy was nautical, he bought it! In an effort to develop some knowledge of the subject, Richard endlessly researched the minutiae of the toys and their manufacturers. He found that the more he learned, the more that remained a mystery. His book is an effort to share his own collection, his vast knowledge and to pass on his interest in history, which can be generated through these enchanting toys.
