Lavishly illustrated throughout, this is the story of a unique location in the story of Britain's railways.
Tyseley depot is unique, having had active steam locomotives based at the depot since 1908. Those managing the steam depot since 1968 have been at the forefront of mainline steam preservation and pioneers of the heritage railway movement from the return of steam to BR in 1971 to the creation of the first publicly owned, charitable controlled Train Operating Company in 2018.

This behind the scenes photographic study focuses on the men and machines that form the basis of that story, offering a glimpse of the depot at work, featuring traditional engineering craftsmanship of the highest order. The book also features the record-breaking main line runs of GWR Castle Class - Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, the return to steam of Clun Castle, charter excursions and Shakespeare Express.

Robin has now returned to full-time education as a PhD Student at BCRRE, University of Birmingham researching sustainability and governance of heritage railways. Robin is a retired Chartered Architect and Consultant. He was a Rail Manager for 8 years at Network SouthEast and partner with a national architectural practice for 25 years, the last ten years as Chairman, a founding partner of the environmental and economic consultancy ERES and has served as a magistrate for 29 years. He has a lifelong passion for steam railways, travelling over one million miles, and is perhaps best known for his innovative photography for which he has won several awards and was recently invited to the US give lectures on his photography. Robin volunteers at Vintage Trains where he holds the position of Company Secretary.
