Propolis, a substance processed by bees from resin which they gather from trees and plants, is used to safeguard the health of the hive, and research studies have shown that its powerful antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agents can be beneficial to humans too. It has proved effective in treating skin complaints, wounds and burns, respiratory problems such as asthma and bronchitis, and in alleviating arthritis, rheumatism and gastro-intestinal complaints. Most importantly, it has shown that it could be a natural alternative to antibiotics and that it may have the ability to boost the immune system. The author explains how to use it as part of everyday care, what products are available and how to make your own preparations. Full resources and references are included.
James Feamley is a recognised world authority on propolis and has collected probably the largest body of research on the subject anywhere. He himself has been responsible for the renaissance of interest in propolis over the past ten years and has also stimulated and funded new research into its unique properties. A law graduate, he lectured in criminology at the University of Kingston before concentrating on his lifelong interest in natural health. He has owned and run a vegetarian restaurant and wholefood shop and was co-founder of Bee Health, a company manufacturing bee products. He is now Commercial Development Director of Materia Medica, a group of companies manufacturing and marketing health food products throughout the world.
