Gondwanaland split apart to form what is now India, Africa and South America 45 million years ago. Spellbound by the ancient myth of the Gonds of India, Tahir Shah followed their path through India and Pakistan to Uganda and Rwanda, Kenya and Liberia, before crossing the Atlantic to Brazil.
45 million years ago, the supercontinent of Gondwanaland split apart. This created what are now known as India, Africa and South America. The huge landmass was named after the Gond people of India. Meeting a Gond storyteller on a visit to Bombay, Tahir Shah heard their ancient saga. He vowed to visit all three parts of Gondwanaland. As he travelled he met an extraordinary range of wanderers and expatriates, attended magical ceremonies and sought mythical treasures. Roughing it most of the way, Shah's expeditions move through sweltering India and Pakistan, Uganda and Rwanda, Kanya and Liberia, Brazil and finally Argentina's Patagonian glaciers.

Tahir Shah was born in 1966 into the Afghan nobility, the Saadat of Paghman. His wife is from Bombay and they met during his travels for Beyond the Devil's Teeth. A freelance writer and journalist, he has written widely on the Near and Middle East and India.
