This book focuses on the mechanical properties and permeability of coal, and the gas flow in coal seams. Based on coal permeability models, it establishes different models for coal seam gas, from the linear flow model to the gas-solid coupling flow model. It also provides the theoretical basis for the exploitation and safe production of coal as well as coal seam gas resources. As such, it is a valuable reference for researchers, advanced students and practitioners working in mining engineering and coalbed methane engineering.

Yuanping Cheng is an outstanding professor of China University of Mining & Technology,  and an expert of national work safety expert panel. He received his B.Sc. from Liaoning Technical University in 1984, and M.Sc. (1987) and Ph.D. (1990) from China University of Mining & Technology. He is an editorial board member of  Journal of China Coal Society and Journal of Mining and Safety Engineering. His research interests include coal mine gas prevention and control and building fire protection theory and engineering application. He has been a consultant and a lecture to several organizations and mining corporations. For his research and educational achievements, he has received numerous recognitions and awards.

Qingquan Liu is currently an associate professor of China University of Mining & Technology. His key areas of expertise include numerical simulation of gas transport in porous media and deformation and damage induced coal permeability evolution. Dr Liu holds the degrees of PhD in safety science and engineering from China University of Mining & Technology. Dr Liu is an academic editor of the journal named Geofluids.

Dr Ren is currently an Associate Professor in Mining Engineering, and Director for the Centre of Infrastructure Protection and Mining Safety, University of Wollongong, Australia. His key areas of expertise include Safety and Occupational Health in Mines, mine gas drainage, spontaneous combustion and fire; and Computational modelling and simulation in Mining Engineering. Dr Ren holds the degrees of PhD and MSC in Mining Engineering from the University of Nottingham, UK. He is a Chartered Engineer registered with the UK Engineering Council, a member of Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (The AusIMM), a member of Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3).
