This work, which comprises most of the papers presented at the Second International Conference on Multiphase Flow, aims to inspire a generation of new ideas by exposing researchers and practitioners in the field to new techniques, problems and paradigms.
Although enormous strides have been made in the understanding, modelling and numerical simulation of multiphase flows, it is clear that much still remains to be done. It seems unlikely that an all-encompassing theory will be found, but more probable that one or more techniques will be matched to a system or phenomenon of interest that is able to capture the essential physics under a range of conditions. This book, which comprises most of the papers presented at the Second International Conference on Multiphase Flow, aims to inspire a generation of new ideas by exposing researchers and practitioners in the field to new techniques, problems and paradigms. The forty contributions included cover: multiphase flow systems; multiphase flow and heat transfer; particle-flow interaction; suspensions - experiment and theory; continuum suspension models; interface phenomena; bubble and drop dynamics; bubble flows; and cavitation.

Multiphase flow systems: Boundary element method numerical model based on mixture theory of two-phase flow; Front tracking for multiphase fluid mixing; A finite-volume based computational model for one dimensional, unsteady two fluid flow in a pipe; A mathematical model of particle transport in electrostatic spray coating; Numerical analysis of powder deposition in blast furnace by using multi-fluid process simulator; Large-eddy simulation of multiphase flows in complex combustors; Numerical modelling of liquid-liquid flow related to countercurrent chromatography (CCC); Spreading of a viscous liquid film over the corrugated surface; Dispersion and coalescence of two pulses of spherical solid particles dropped successively into an initially quiescent liquid; Simulation of particle-laden gas flows in an anti-abrasive elbow; Spectrum of acoustic noise excited by collapse of spherical bubble in viscoelastic liquid; Numerical modeling of formation and movement of vortex rings using a shock tube. Multiphase flow and heat transfer: Numerical simulating for three kinds of phase-change heat transfer problem in two-phase flow; Experimental and numerical investigations in the near-burner region of a versatile multi fuel burner. Particle-flow interaction: Simulation of settling and break-up of suspension drops in a fluid; Vortex method for Lagrangian-Lagrangian simulation applied to internal liquid-solid two-phase flow; Transport phenomenon of two-dimensional circular particle moving in axially rotating drum filled with viscous fluid; DNS study of interactions between clouds of particle and isotropic homogeneous turbulent flow; Interaction of flow with mobile bottom in the river mouth; Modelling and simulation of gas-solid flows in riser reactors. Suspensions - experiment and theory: Direct evaluation of lubrication forces in asymptotically corrected completed double layer boundary integral equation formulations; Dynamics of particle suspensions in heterodyned triaxial magnetic fields; MRI studies of sedimenting suspensions. Continuum suspension models: Particle migration rates in a Couette apparatus; An ellipsoidal droplet model for dilute emulsions: application to complex mixing flows; Development of a frame-invariant suspension flow model; One-dimensional analysis of a continuum model for structure in electrorheological fluids. Interface phenomena: Approximation of multicomponent fluid flows with a varying coefficient of interfacial tension; The role of solid substrate on the spreading kinetics of liquid droplet.
