Andreas Kirschning is professor at the Institute of Organic Chemistry at Leibniz University Hannover, Germany. He studied chemistry at the University of Hamburg (Germany) and at Southampton University (UK). He received his PhD in the group of Prof. E. Schaumann in Hamburg in 1989 working in the field of organosilicon chemistry. After a postdoctoral stay at the University of Washington (Seattle, USA) with Prof. H. G. Floss, he started his independent research at Clausthal University of Technology (Germany) in 1991, where he finished his habilitation in 1996. In 2000 he moved to Leibniz University Hannover. His research interests cover structure elucidation as well as the semi-, total and mutasynthesis of natural products, biomedical biopolymers, and synthetic technologies (solid-phase assisted synthesis, microreactors and inductive heating). He has published 205 peer-reviewed contributions and 7 patents. Markus Kalesse is professor at the Institute of Organic Chemistry at Leibniz University Hannover, Germany, and Head of Department Medicinal Chemistry of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig, Germany. He obtained his PhD at Leibniz University Hannover in 1991 with Prof. D. Schinzer. After two postdoctoral studies with Prof. S.D. Burke and Prof. L.L. Kiessling at the University Wisconsin/Madison (USA) he completed his habilitation at Leibniz University Hannover in 1997, under the supervision of Prof. E. Winterfeldt. He became a professor at Freie Universitat Berlin (Germany) in 2002 and was appointed professor at Leibniz University Hannover one year later. Since 2005 he is co-appointed director at HZI Braunschweig. He received the Novartis Lectureship in 2004/2005, and his research interests include natural products synthesis, asymmetric catalysis and medicinal chemistry.
