Loomis's Essentials of Toxicology, Fifth Edition, provides the information on the harmful biologic effects associated with exposures to chemicals of all types. The scope of this book includes a discussion of the major types of chemicals involved, their general properties and detrimental biologic effects, the methods used to demonstrate these effects, the basis for clinical diagnosis, and therapy for the harmful effects of chemicals on humans. Individual examples are used to demonstrate the principle discussed. This reference volume will be an invaluable resource for both toxicologists and graduate and advanced undergraduate students in toxicology and public health.

A. Wallace Hayes, PhD holds degrees from Auburn University (Ph.D. and MS) and Emory University (AB). He was an NSF predoctoral fellow at Auburn University, an NIH individual postdoctoral fellow at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, a NATO Senior Scientist at the Central Veterinary Laboratory in Weybridge, England, and an NIH Research Career Development Awardee. Dr. Hayes has held Professorships at the University of Alabama, the University of Mississippi Medical Center, and Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Dr. Hayes has authored more than 370 peer-reviewed publications, is the editor of Hayes’ Principles and Methods of Toxicology, 7th edition, Human and Experimental Toxicology, Cutaneous and Ocular Toxicology, Toxicology Research and Application, and the co-editor of the Target Organ Toxicity Series of books. Dr. Hayes is the Editor-in-Chief emeritus, of Food and Chemical Toxicology and the co-author of Loomis’ Essential of Toxicology, 5th Edition. Dr. Hayes is past Secretary-General of IUTOX (two terms), past board member of the American Board of Toxicology, past president of the American College of Toxicology, the Toxicology Education Foundation, and the Academy of Toxicological Sciences, the Toxicology Forum, and past member of the council of the Society of Toxicology. Dr. Hayes is a diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology, the Academy of Toxicological Sciences, the American Board of Forensic Medicine, and the American Board of Forensic Examiners. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Toxicological Sciences, the Royal Society of Biology (UK), the Royal Society of Medicine (UK), the American College of Forensic Examiners, and the American College of Nutrition. Dr. Hayes is a registered toxicologist in the European Union (ERT) and a certified nutrition specialist (food safety). Dr. Hayes was honored by the Society of Toxicology in 2006 with its Merit Award, by the Mid-Atlantic Society of Toxicology with its Ambassador Award in 2012, by the American College of Toxicology in 2012 with its Distinguished Scientist Award, and by the International Dose-Response Society in 2013 with its Outstanding Leadership Award, and by The American Academy of Toxicology with its Mildred S. Christian Career Achievement Award in 2021. Dr. Hayes was named a Distinguished Fellow by the American College of Toxicology in 2013 and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2014. Dr. Wang obtained an MD from Norman Bethune University of Medical Sciences in China, a PhD in Toxicology from University of Louisiana, and is a Diplomat of the American Board of Toxicology. Dr. Wang’s professional experience includes clinical practice in oncology, research on gene regulation in an academic setting, and more than 20 years of professional practice as toxicologist in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry. She is currently the Executive Director of Translational & Development Sciences at Coherus BioSciences, where she oversees preclinical development (in vivo pharmacokinetics, pharmacology and toxicology of small molecules and biologics) of drug candidates from early through late stage development. Prior to joining Coherus, Dr. Wang worked at Novartis Pharmaceuticals and Achaogen, where she led safety assessment efforts for oncology and non-oncology drug development. Dr. Wang received multiple professional awards, recognizing her significant achievements and performance above and beyond work requirements (e.g. Novartis Above & Beyond, Due Diligence, Catalyst Awards, and Spot Awards). She was also acknowledged for outstanding collaboration and contributions on multidisciplinary teams (e.g., Novartis Team Award). Dr. Wang is an active member with Society of Toxicology (SOT), and has contributed to the society’s leadership team as a Councilor and by serving on numerous elected and appointed committees. She also served on the Board of Directors for the American Board of Toxicology (ABT) and is an advisor to the Education Committee at International Union of Toxicology (IUTOX). Dr. Wang is on the Editorial Boards of the International Journal of Toxicology and Toxicology Research and Application. Dr. Wang has taught a course on Practical Toxicology at the University of California at Berkeley as a guest lecturer. The Molecular Pathogenesis Group. The group has focused on defining the pathogenesis/carcinogenesis of tumors affecting the reproductive tract of rodents and humans, and assessing the role of environmental and endogenous hormonal factors in the growth of these tumors Dr. Ted A. Loomis, since receiving his M.D. from Yale University School of Medicine in 1946, he has had a rewarding career in Pharmacology and Toxicology. His career started with an internship at the Marine Hospital, U.S. Public Health Service, Seattle, WA in 1946. By 1953 he as serving as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Service. After his military service he eventually became a Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Washington School of Medicine until 1987, and currently is a Consulting Toxicologist. Some of his accomplishments include recipient awards for: Toxicology Education, Toxicology and Forum for Advancement of Toxicology, 1976 and Merit Award, Society of Toxicology, 1986. His professional activities include various committee memberships organizations such as: Tests for Intoxication, National Safety Council, since 1951, Agricultural Advisory Board on Pesticides and Insecticides, State of Washington, 1963-77, and Scientific Review Panel for Health Research, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 1980. By 1978, Dr. Loomis had published three editions of Essentials of Toxicology, Lea & Febiger, Philadelphia. He has also been the author or co-author of approximately 100 papers in the scientific literature.
