This book consists of a series of reviews on selected topics within the rapidly and vastly expanding field of membrane biology. Its aim is to highlight the most significant and important advances that have been made in recent years in understanding the structure, dynamics, and functions of cell membranes. The progress that is being made in research in this field is due to the application of integrated experimental ap proaches, utilizing sophisticated and novel techniques in molecular biology, cell biology, biophysics and biochemistry. Due to the advances made, many problems have been or are being solved at the molecular level. With the help of an Editorial Advisory Board consisting of Jean-Pierre Changeux (Paris), Paolo Comoglio (Torino), Rainer Jaenicke (Regens burg), Sten Orrenius (Stockholm), Lorenzo Pinna (Padova), Konrad Sandhoff (Bonn), and Gottfried Schatz (Basel), we have selected a number of topics in areas in which progress has been particularly rapid, and have invited internationally acknowledged experts in the field to review these topics. The areas covered in this monograph are: 1) Signal transduction; 2) Membrane traffic: Proteins and lipids; 3) Bioenergetics: Energy transfer and membrane transport; 4) Cellular ion homeostasis; 5) Growth factors and adhesion molecules; 6) Structural analysis of mem brane proteins; and 7) Membranes and disease.

Signal transduction.- The role of p21ras in receptor tyrosine kinase signaling.- Casein kinase-2 and cell signaling.- Molecular structure of G protein-coupled P2 purinoceptors.- RAS proteins and control of the cell cycle in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.- Membrane traffic: Proteins and lipids.- Protein import into mitochondria.- Translocation of bacterial protein toxins across membranes.- Non-clathrin coat proteins in biosynthetic vesicular protein transport.- Role of the GTP/GDP switch for the function of rab5 in endocytosis.- Regulation of autophagy.- Glycosphingolipids and sphingolipid activator proteins: Cell biology, biochemistry and molecular genetics.- Bioenergetics: Energy transfer and membrane transport.- On the mechanism of proton pumps in respiratory chains.- Energetics and formation of ATP synthase: Allosteric, chemiosmotic and biosynthetic control of ?? and ??? core.- Mitochondrial ATP synthase: Progress toward understanding the relationship between its unique structure and its biological function.- Structure-function relationships in the mitochondrial carrier family.- Cellular ion homeostasis.- Metabolic conversions of NAD+ and cyclic ADP ribose at the outer surface of human red blood cells.- Mg2+ Homeostasis in cardiac ventricular myocytes.- Growth factors and adhesion molecules.- Signal transduction by growth factor receptors.- Cell surface associated mucins: Structure and effects on cell adhesion.- Role of ?1 integrin cytoplasmic domain in signaling and cell adhesion.- Structural analysis of membrane proteins.- Structural analysis of membrane proteins.- Helix-helix interactions inside membranes.- Annexin V: Structure-function analysis of a voltage-gated, calcium-selective ion channel.- Structure and function of the membrane channel porin.- Membranes and disease.- Oxygen damage and mutations in mitochondrial DNA associated with aging and degenerative diseases.
