This two-volume set brings together 37 selected essays. They are published as a tribute to the Mehra-Rechenberg collaboration, and cover various aspects of quantum theory, the special and general theories of relativity, the foundations of statistical mechanics, and more.
The Golden Age of Theoretical Physics brings together 37 selected essays. Many of these essays were first presented as lectures at various universities in Europe and the USA, and then published as reports or articles. Their enlarged, final versions were published in the joint work of Jagdish Mehra and Helmut Rechenberg, The Historical Development of Quantum Theory, while the other essays were published as articles in scientific journals or in edited books. Here they are published together as a tribute to the Mehra-Rechenberg collaboration sustained for several decades, and cover various aspects of quantum theory, the special and general theories of relativity, the foundations of statistical mechanics, and some of their fundamental applications. Two essays, ‘Albert Einstein's “First” Paper’ (Essay 1) and ‘The Dream of Leonardo da Vinci’ (Essay 37), lie outside the major themes treated in this book, but are included here because of their historical interest. The origin of each essay is explained in a footnote.This book deals with the most important themes developed in the first 40 years of the twentieth century by some of the greatest pioneers and architects of modern physics. It is a vital source of information about what can veritably be described as ‘the golden age of theoretical physics’.

Trained as a theoretical physicist in the schools of Heisenberg and Pauli, Jagdish Mehra is a distinguished historian of modern physics. His major work (with Helmut Rechenberg) is The Historical Development of Quantum Theory, 1900-1941, with an Epilogue, 1942-1999 (six volumes, nine books, Springer-Verlag, New York). In 1994 Professor Mehra published The Beat of a Different Drum: The Life and Science of Richard Feynman (Oxford University Press), and later he published (with Kimball A Milton) a companion volume, Climbing the Mountain: The Scientific Biography of Julian Schwinger (Oxford, 2000). With Arthur Wightman of Princeton University, he has coedited The Collected Works of Eugene Paul Wigner (eight volumes, Springer-Verlag, New York, 1992-2000), and he has also published Einstein, Physics and Reality (World Scientific, 1999). Professor Jagdish Mehra has held prestigious academic appointments in Europe and the USA, including the Swiss National Science Foundation Professorship at the University of Geneva, the UNESCO-Sir Julian Huxley Distinguished Professorship of Physics and the History of Science in Trieste, Italy, and Paris, France, and the Regents' Professorship at the University of California. He lives in Houston, Texas, USA, where - for a long time - he has been associated with the University of Houston, which now houses The Jagdish Mehra Collection, a vast archive of books, monographs, tapes of interviews and their transcripts, manuscripts, photographs, and scientific correspondence, which Professor Mehra donated to it.
