Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Short Courses in Geology Series, Volume 9.
Glacial-marine sedimentation is one of the more complex and least known aspects of sedimentation. A considerable volume of literature, however, does exist on the subject, especially describing ancient glacial-marine deposits [e.g., Anderson, 1983; Andrews and Match, 1983; Molnia, 1983]. These ancient glacial-marine deposits are widespread, both in time and space, and are of considerable paleogeographic significance. Surprisingly and unfortunately, many of these modern characterizations of ancient glacial-marine environments are based on a very restricted understanding of the complexities of the modem glacial and glacial-marine environments.

JOHN B. ANDERSON is the Maurice Ewing Professor of Oceanography, Emeritus at Rice University in Texas. He has participated in 24 scientific expeditions to Antarctica and countless other expeditions from Alaska to Chile. He has authored and co-authored over 250 peer-reviewed publications, edited 5 volumes and published two books. JULIA S. WELLNER is the Assistant Professor of Stratigraphy, Sedimentology, and Glacial Processes in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Houston in Texas. Her research interests include Antarctic Ice Sheet history since the Eocene and geomorphic signatures of ice sheet retreat across the continental shelf.
