Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 9.
Dr. Weikko A. Heiskanen has been a leader in the field of physical geodesy, or gravimetric geodesy as he would phrase it, for many years. His contributions to the theory of isostasy, the normal gravity field, and the figure of the Earth reserve for him a place of honor in the geodesists' 'Hall of Fame.' Dedicated to the gravimetric method and the belief that satellite and gravimetric geodesy must produce consistent results, Dr. Heiskanen arranged for a symposium at which the achievements of gravimetric geodesy were summarized and at which the directions of future research were indicated. The results of these deliberations, in the form of papers presented at the symposium, are reproduced in this monograph dedicated to Dr. Heiskanen. Papers were presented at the symposium on 'Extension of the Gravity Anomalies to Unsurveyed Areas' at Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, U.S.A., from November 18 to 20, 1964. The symposium, sponsored by the International Association of Geodesy of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics and by the American Geophysical Union, was organized into the four sessions listed in the table of contents. Preceding the presentation of papers at each session a reporter summarized the accomplishments within the field under discussion.
