Oneofthese effects is a spectacular formation of J-aggregates with distinct and very sharp excitationandemissionbands. The present book overviews the pathways for achieving this goal. In line with the discussion on monomeric ?uorescence reporters in the accompanying book (Vol. 8ofthisseries),aninsightfulanalysisofphotophysicalmechanismsbehind the ?uorescence response of composed and nanostructured materials is made. Based on the progress in understanding these mechanisms, their realization in differentchemicalstructuresisoverviewed. vii viii Preface Demonstratingtheprogressinaninterdisciplinary?eldofresearchanddev- opment, thisbookisprimarilyaddressedtospecialistswithdifferentbackground physicists, organic and analytical chemists, and photochemists to those who developandapplynew?uorescencereporters. General aspects.- Fluorescence reporters in sensing technologies.- Cell imaging with organic dyes.- Cell imaging with nanoscale devices.- Cell imaging with visible fluorescent proteins.- Tissue and whole body imaging.

From the reviews:

"This book is a comprehensive overview of the different types of nanoscale probes that have been and are currently being developed for sensing of analytes. The timely reference section allows the reader to locate key references to the primary literature for expansion of the material covered. ... a valuable resource that covers the synthetic, photo-physical, and theoretical aspects of this diverse field of research." (Jeffrey T. Petty, Journal of the American Chemical Society, Vol. 133, 2011)
