The purpose of this book is to give the engineering student and the practical engineer a systematic introduction to optical MEMS (Micro electro mechanical systems) and micromechanical photonics through not only theoretical and experimental results, but also by describing various products and their fields of application. After an overview on optical MEMS and micromechanical photonics, the book describes extremely-short-external-cavity laser diodes tunable laser diodes, a resonant sensor and an integrated optical head. It then addresses optical tweezers, the new technology employed to manipulate various types of objects in a variety of research and industrial fields. Coverage progresses through topics on the design and fabrication of an optical rotor and evaluation of mixing performances of micro-liquids for future fluidic applications. In the final chapter, the fundamentals and applications of the near field are described for the future development of micromechanical photonics, as well as near-field features, theoretical analyses, experimental analyses and applications mainly related to optical recording.
Hiroo Ukita received a Dr. Eng. degree from Tohoku University in 1973. He joined Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation in 1973. He has worked in the field of optical disk memory, optical MEMS and optical tweezers. He has received 1990 best paper award at the Optical Memory Symposium and also received Precision Engineering Award from Japan Society for Precision Engineering in 1994. Since 1995, he has been with Ritsumeikan University serving as a professor of the faculty of science and engineering. His current interests cover micromechanical photonics which has emerged from the fusion of photonics, mechanics and electronics and also optical tweezers which has the possibility of supplying micro-energy remotely. Professor Ukita is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the IEEE LEOS Society, the Optical Society of America, the Japan Society of Applied Physics, the Japan Society for Precision Engineering, the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers of Japan. Since 1987 he has worked for the Committee of the International Symposium on Optical Memory and the Microoptics Conference, and currently he serves as an editorial board of the Optical Society of Japan and the Smart Materials and Structures.
