Focusing on emergency medical humanitarian assistance, this accessible new text provides practical clinical guidance for those working in emergency medicine, critical care, and military medicine. There has been great progress over the last 30 years in establishing standards and training programmes to ensure that those who respond to major emergencies are appropriately trained, adequately equipped, qualified to do this work, and accountable for the work that they do. These developments together with insights into current requirements for healthcare and emergency responses are reflected in this book.
Professor Tony Redmond is Professor Emeritus of International Emergency Medicine at the Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute at the University of Manchester, and Emeritus Professor of Emergency Medicine at Keele University. He is the founder of UK-Med, the frontline medical aid charity and served as its chairman for twenty-nine years until 2023. He was awarded an OBE in 1994 for his work providing humanitarian assistance in Sarajevo during the Bosnian war. Professor Redmond continues to work with the WHO, with whom he helped set up the Emergency Medical Teams Initiative, setting standards within the disaster relief field. He is a member of the executive committee of the Faculty of Remote Rural and Humanitarian Healthcare, based at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
