This text provides an introduction to refractive surgery procedures. The field of refractive surgery is opened up for practitioners and assistants, to enable them to educate patients on this topic. It discusses many different types of refractive surgery including radial and astigmatic keratotomy, automated lamellar keratoplasty and LASIK.
Johnny L. Gayton, MD, owner and president of Eyesight Associates of Middle Georgia, Inc., was born in Canton, Georgia in 1955. Educated at the University of Georgia, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1975, and then continued his education atthe Medical College of Georgia, where he earned his MD degree in 1979. He founded Eyesight Associates, now headquartered in Warner Robins, Georgia, in 1983. The corporation, a multi-physician medical practice, now employs over 100 people at its corporate office and 10 satellite offices located in the middle and southern Georgia areas. Dr. Gayton is an international speaker and lecturer and is a member of many professional societies. He recently coauthored The Crystal Clear Guide to Sight for Life with Jan Ledford. He is also the author of the ophthalmic textbook Maximizing Results: Strategies in Refractive, Cataract and Glaucoma Surgery, as well as a contributor to numerous ophthalmic books and journals. Most recently he founded Masterpiece Eyecare, a nationally franchised eyecare company. Robert M. Kershner, MD, FACS pursued his undergraduate studies at Boston University and received his Masters of Science and Doctor of Medicine degrees with honors at The University Vermont College of Medicine. He completed his Internship in General Surgery and obtained his Specialty in Ophthalmology at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center in Tucson. He was Chief Resident in Ophthalmology at the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City. Dr. Kershner has written many scientific articles on the treatment of eye diseases and is a frequent contributor to health columns. He has authored more than 10 textbooks on eye surgery. Dr. Kershner travels internationally as a lecturer of microsurgical techniques. He has developed several microsurgical instruments and is an innovator in single piece, capsular bag intraocular lenses. He is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and The American College of Eye Surgeons, and is a Fellow of The American Academy of Ophthalmology and The American College of Surgeons. He is an active member of the American and European Societies of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Dr. Kershner is Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City, and the Director of the Orange Grove Center for Corrective Eye Surgery in Tucson, Arizona.
