Prostate cancer is the most common cancer amongst males in the Western world. 100,000 new cases are reported yearly, with an average 29,000 deaths as a direct result of cancer of the prostate. Other major problems include incontinence, urinary obstruction and prostatitis. In recent years there have been significant developments in the management of prostatic disorders. The major changes are a result of improved imaging techniques, laparoscopic and laser surgery, day-case anaesthesia and advances in drug therapy.
