Discusses the diagnosis and treatment of special disorders that can affect the voices of professionals. It covers aspects of the clinical care of professional voice users, from anatomy and physiology to the pathology of voice disorders and methods of voice analysis, diagnosis and therapy.
This multidisciplinary work covers the diagnosis and treatment of special disorders that affect the voices of actors, singers, attorneys, politicians and others who depend on a sound voice for their livelihood. With 117 illustrations, specialists cover the clinical care of the professional voice, from the anatomy and physiology of the larynx to the pathology of voice disorders and the methods of voice analysis, diagnosis and therapy. Attention is taken to respond to the needs of individual patients. Guidelines are offered for establishing a state-of-the-art clinical voice laboratory and using techniques such as laryngeal stroboscopy, electroglottography, electromyography and airflow analysis for assessing voice disorders. The contributors describe exercises for improving patients' respiratory control, muscle strength and laryngeal co-ordination and document the efficacy and side effects of medications for treating vocal dysfunction. Attention is also given to the ramifications of surgery for treatment of voice disorders and of facial plastic surgery in professional voice users.
Towards that end, the book includes patient history questionnaire forms which help to speed diagnosis and which have been translated into most of the languages encountered by voice care physicians. It is written by and for otolaryngologists, speech language pathologists, arts medicine physicians, singing teachers and voice coaches.
