Healthcare is shifting towards a holistic, whole person approach to improve population health, decrease cost of care, and improve patient, and provider experiences. To achieve this, the primary care sector is adopting an integrated, interprofessional care team model which addresses both biomedical and behavioral health, and includes preventative care, population health management, technology, and innovative strategies to increase access to care. Occupational therapy (OT) is uniquely positioned to add their distinct whole person mental/behavioral health and medical care scope and skill to these teams to address patient needs. In traditional OT settings, intervention sessions are longer, and focus on acute rehabilitation or mental/behavioral health conditions. This text is a collaboration between leaders in primary care occupational therapy (OT), including Sue Dahl-Popolizio DBH, OTR/L, Katie Smith, OTD, MHA, OTR/L, Mackenzie Day, OTD, MHA, OTR/L, Sherry Muir, PhD, OTR/L, and with interprofessional collaborator William Manard, MD. Drs. Muir and Dahl-Popolizio have presented and published extensively on primary care OT, including articles and presentations addressing clinical and administrative topics. Drs. Day (formerly Gamble) and Smith have presented at state and national conferences and published in a national journal on the topic of primary care. Dr. Dahl-Popolizio is currently Program Director of the Doctor of Behavioral Health Program at Arizona State University; a program whose focus is interprofessional, integrated primary care. Dr. Muir is the program director of the Occupational Therapy Doctoral Program at the University of Arkansas. All have experience providing OT services in the primary care setting, and have skills in addressing administrative issues surrounding primary care practice, including billing and reimbursement, as evidenced by publications on this topic. Dr. Manard is a well published medical doctor who has experience working with an occupational therapist in the primary care setting.
