Integrative medicine is defined as a healing-oriented medicine that takes account of the whole person (body, mind, and spirit) as well as all aspects of lifestyle. It emphasizes the therapeutic relationship and makes use of appropriate therapies, both conventional and alternative. Series editor Andrew Weil, MD is Professor and Director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona. Dr. Weil's program was the first such academic program in the US, and its stated goal is "to combine the best ideas and practice of conventional and alternative medicine into cost effective treatments without embracing alternative practices uncritically."
John W. McBurney, MD, is Chief of In-Patient Neurology and Medical Director of the St. Francis Comprehensive Stroke Center at Bon Secours-Mercy Health System in Greenville, SC. He is also Assistant Professor of Neurology at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. McBurney completed a fellowship in EEG and Epilepsy at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and later on a fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona. He is board certified in neurology, EEG and Sleep Medicine. His interest in integrative medicine stems from his long experience in diagnosing and treating chronic neurological neurological diseases, especially stroke and dementia. Ilene S. Ruhoy, MD, PhD is a board-certified neurologist and founder and medical director of the Center for Healing Neurology in Seattle, WA. Trained in both pediatric and adult neurology, Dr. Ruhoy is a graduate of the Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship at the University of Washington and the Integrative Medicine Fellowship at the University of Arizona. She has also received certification from the Helms Medical Institute Acupuncture.
