Presents the basic science of gas and gas-fluid interfaces, and their relationship to clinical phenomena and therapeutic applications of intraocular gas; clinical techniques to examine and assess eyes containing the gas; and the applications of the gas including pneumatic retinoplexy and adjunctive procedures in other vitreoretinal procedures.
Intraocular gas has been used in the last 50 years in cataract, glaucoma, and retinal surgery. Increasingly important in retinal surgery in the past 20 years, it is routinely used as an adjunct in the repair of simple and complicated retinal detachments. It is also used as a substitute for conventional surgery to repair retinal detachments. Special knowledge and skill is required to understand how intraocular gas works, how to assess the eye, and how to perform the procedures using intraocular gas. This text comprises (1) the basic science of gas and gas-fluid interfaces, and their relationship to clinical phenomena and therapeutic applications of intraocular gas; (2) special clinical techniques necessary to examine and assess properly eyes containing the gas; and (3) the applications of the gas including pneumatic retinoplexy (a means of repairing retinal detachments) and adjunctive procedures in other vitreoretinal procedures.
