Dr. Waqar Ahmed Qureshi states that most of these perianal and anorectal problems can be successfully treated non-surgically. Diagnosis and Management Guide for Anorectal Disease: A Clinical Reference reviews a number of diseases that gastroenterologists should be able to effectively manage in their office, which eliminates extra cost, inconvenience, and frustration for their patients.
A few of the topics that can be found inside:
Anatomy and Examination
Anatomy and Physiology of the Pelvic Floor
Benign Anorectal Conditions
Hemorrhoids, Anal Fissures, and Anal Pruritus
Benign Soft Tissue, Perianal, Perineal, and Complicated Conditions
Pilonidal Disease, Aanorectal IBD Management, and Defecation Disorders
Neoplasms
Anal Carcinoma and screening high-risk groups
The gastroenterologist occupies a unique position between conservative treatment offered by primary care physicians and the more invasive procedures offered by the surgeon. Diagnosis and Management Guide for Anorectal Disease: A Clinical Reference is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of anorectal diseases that they can manage and, therefore, improve the care of their patients in one comprehensive volume.
Waqar Qureshi, MD, FRCP, FACP, FACG, FASGE spent his early years in the United Kingdom, where he earned his medical degree at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, University of London. Following residency training in Rochester, NY and fellowship training in Gastroenterology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, he was recruited to Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX, in 1997 to be Chief of Endoscopy. He is now Professor in the Section of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Baylor. He recognized that, despite the widespread popularity of gastroenterology, few programs provided comprehensive training in anorectal disorders. Dr. Qureshi started an anorectal clinic, which is now included as an essential rotation by the fellows in training so as to learn the details regarding managing anorectal disease in the outpatient setting. The national gastroenterology societies have since recognized this deficiency in training and have begun to offer workshops on anorectal disease, some of which Dr. Qureshi has directed. In addition, he obtained a grant from the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy to produce a DVD on anorectal examination (https://learn.asge.org/Public/Catalog/Home.aspx).
