Serge Ferrari graduated from the Geneva Faculty of medicine in 1989, and has been research and clinical fellow, and Instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School in 1997-2001. He is currently Associate Professor of Medicine at the Geneva Faculty of Medicine. He is also a Medical Associate at the Department of Internal Medicine Specialties (Bone Diseases) of the Geneva University Hospital. His main research areas are bone growth and fragility in childhood, genetics of osteoporosis, molecular mechanisms of parathyroid hormone activity and bone remodeling. He is co-chair of the council of scientific advisors of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) and past President of the Swiss Bone and Mineral Society.

He received his medical training at the University of Paris, and his PhD at the University of Compiègne, for his data on bone assessment by ultrasounds. He has published works in the areas of primary and secondary osteoporosis, malignant bone diseases, and Paget’s disease. He is author and co-author of 150 original papers and book chapters. He is President of GRIO, the French Society of Osteoporosis. He is a member of the Editorial Board of Osteoporosis International.
