This text examines the use of hydrotherapy in line with current evidence-based practice, and explores the practical issues of setting up a water birthing facility both at home and in a hospital environment. The issues of maternal and newborn physiology are explained and the practical apsects of care during and after use of a birthing pool are discussed. A new chapter on midwifery education explains how to comply with the requirements for PREP.

Dianne Garland has been a practising midwife for the past seventeen years and has experience in clinical, educational and managerial roles. She has lectured widely on the use of water in labour both abroad and in the UK, including ICM Japan, Vancouver, Oslo and Manila. In conjunction with local companies she has designed a waterbirthing tub and the first underwater fetal heart rate Dopper. Her professional services have been utilised by the Royal College of Midwives and the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit, and she has acted as a consultant to many maternity units in the UK.
