Gives a review on the use of the mismatch negativity (MMN) brain response, the only objective index of sound-discrimination accuracy in assessing the central auditory function in normals and in several pathological conditions. MMN can be used to predict coma outcome, and to estimate the function of cochlear prostheses.
This publication gives a state-of-the-art review on the use of the mismatch negativity (MMN) brain response, the only objective index of sound-discrimination accuracy in assessing the central auditory function in normals and in several pathological conditions. Because of its attention- and task-independent elicitation, MMN can be used to study the central auditory function of patients and infants who cannot perform behavioral tasks properly. Thus, MMN can, for example, be used to identify speech-perception problems in newborns and infants well before they manifest themselves in the form of speech delay. MMN can also be used to predict coma outcome, to estimate the function of cochlear prostheses, to evaluate the pathology of auditory processing in schizophrenia, neurodegenerative diseases and aging, and to assess the attentional damage in unilateral neglect after right-hemisphere damages.

Mismatch negativity - clinical and other applications, R. Naatanen and C. Escera; mismatch negativity - different water in the same river, W. Picton, C. Alain et al; speech sound representation in the brain, N. Kraus and M. Cheour; involuntary attention and distractibility as evaluated with event-related brain potentials, C. Escera, K. Alho et al; maturation of the mismatch negativity - effects of profound deafness and cochlear implant use, C.W. Ponton, J.J. Eggermont et al; coma outcome prediction using event-related potentials - P3 and mismatch negativity, N.M. Kane, S.R. Butler and T. Simpson; mismatch negativity and N100 in comatose patients, C. Fischer, D. Morlet and M.-H. Giard; mismatch negativity and N100 monitoring - potential clinical value and methodological advances, D. Morlet, P. Bouchet and C. Fischer; intracortical mechanisms of mismatch negativity dysfunction in schizophrenia, D.C. Javitt; mismatch negativity in ageing and Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. E. Pekkonen; unilateral neglect after right-hemisphere damage - contributions from event-related potentials, L.Y. Deouell, H. Hamalainen and S. Bentin; towards optimal recording and analysis of the mismatch negativity, J. Sinkkonen and M. Tervaniemi.
