Introduction

A high-sugar diet is one of the primary causes of obesity, diabetes, depression, stress and anxiety issues, and a host of other health problems. Sadly, a quick look at current health-care statistics indicates that these ‘lifestyle’ diseases are on a parallel rise across the board with the increase in sugar consumption. Chances are, you know people who have a health-related illness that can be traced back to poor nutrition — or perhaps you’re in danger of such an illness yourself. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, digestive issues and cardiovascular problems are just a few of the illnesses discussed daily.

We have both had the pleasure of changing the lives of thousands of people just through changing the simple act of eating! We have witnessed firsthand how sugar abuse is addictive, and physically, mentally and emotionally destabilising. We’ve seen people from all walks of life and many different backgrounds — otherwise smart and capable individuals completely defeated by poor nutrition — begin to flourish on a low-sugar, whole-foods way of life.

Sugar is just as addictive as cocaine, but it’s cheap, legal and socially acceptable. If people were selling a drug that had the same damaging effects as sugar, the government would insist they stop selling it immediately. Yet, sugar is everywhere — in cereals, soft drinks, sport drinks, burger buns, peanut butter, and even in flavoured milks. Sugar addiction and other unhealthy lifestyle habits stem from (and result in) poor nutrition, lack of sleep and stress. It’s our hope that this book reaches many more people than we could possibly help in nutrition consultation, and serves as a motivating guidebook and a beacon of hope for the millions of people struggling with sugar addiction, weight gain, stress, diabetes, exhaustion, poor self-esteem and depression.

About This Book

Beating sugar addiction requires more than just staying away from sweet treats. To truly transition into a new healthy lifestyle, you must look into the motivation behind your behaviour, figure out what emotional holes you’ve been trying to fill with sugar, and understand how you’re going to create this new lifestyle so it becomes habitual and easy for you to sustain.

We wrote this book with the intention of leading you through the process of getting off sugar, feeling good about yourself, and living a healthier lifestyle. As you go through the process, you’ll find that it may also help you investigate, understand, and ultimately change your behaviour and mindset about lots of things — this is about much more than just cutting out sugar! When you begin to feel good physically and mentally, you feel better about most things in your life.

Herein you find chapters about understanding sugar, carbohydrates and the psychology of sugar addiction; navigating restaurants and special occasions; eating mindfully; building a support system; ‘cleansing’ your pantry; and — most importantly — breaking the cycle of failure and frustration, leading to a low-sugar life that’s healthy, empowered and under your own control.

Throughout this book, we use the word sugar to mean a low-nutrient, sweet carbohydrate like table sugar, lollies, soft drinks or high-fructose corn syrup, as opposed to the technical definition of a sugar that a chemist would use. Other sources of carbohydrates you digest (like vegetables and grains) are technically broken down into simple sugars too, but we ask the technical wizards to forgive us as we use the word sugar in more conventional terms, referring to junk food and processed sweeteners.

Here are some other conventions to keep in mind while digging into this book:

We discuss a lot of health issues, but please understand that we refer to medical conditions and diseases in general terms only. You shouldn’t consider the advice or information contained in this book to be pertinent to your specific situation — always consult with a qualified medical practitioner or nutrition consultant for more personalised information.

We use italics for terms that we define or that we want to emphasise. Web addresses appear in monofont so they're easy to pick out.

Part IV of this book is full of recipes, and in it we use the metric system of measurement, so temperatures are in Celsius, measurements are in cups, millilitres and grams, and so on.

In the recipes, do your best to use organic ingredients whenever possible. Eggs should be from pasture-fed, antibiotic-free chickens. Choose fresh fruits, vegetables, grains and herbs that are organic to avoid pesticides and genetically modified ingredients. All meat should ideally be pasture-raised without antibiotics. Buy fish that is wild-caught, not farmed.

This tomato icon highlights the vegetarian recipes in the book.

Some chapters contain sidebars — sections of text enclosed in boxes that give additional information, more technical details, or bonus advice that’s not essential to the main text. If you’re pressed for time, feel free to skip over the sidebars and perhaps come back to them later.

You can also jump over the items marked by the Technical Stuff icon. With these discussions, we go a little deeper into the science or technical details of a particular issue.

Foolish Assumptions

While working on this book, we made some general assumptions about who would be reading it:

We assume that you feel busy and overwhelmed on a regular basis, and that you often resort to stress eating or medicating with sugar. And, most importantly, you want to stop doing this!

We assume that you’ve struggled for a long time with food confusion, losing weight, sticking to healthy eating plans and getting control over your life in general, and you need dietary advice that’s both effective and realistic.

We assume that you have lots of things packed into your schedule, and you don't have all day to just sit around and read. We've attempted to be reasonably thorough, without getting too technical or wordy, while delivering valuable information in a concise fashion. You can find additional information and resources online at www.ahealthyview.com.au.

Icons Used in This Book

Throughout the margins of this book you find symbols that spotlight important points, examples and warnings. Look for these icons:

This icon marks information that’s important to remember, or may represent a good summary of a larger section. These may be worth reading twice or jotting down if you’re a note-taker.

We love knowing the details of how and why things work the way they do, and nutrition science and physiology are not exceptions. Unfortunately for some of you, we also love to explain these details when we write. So if you’re not into scientific explanations, feel free to skip the paragraphs marked with this icon.

Tidbits and takeaway messages are marked with this icon. These are nuggets that you may want to highlight or forward to your friends.

The Warning icon cautions you about something potentially harmful. When you see this icon, pay careful attention to the corresponding text.

Where to Go from Here

You don’t have to read Beating Sugar Addiction For Dummies from cover to cover before you begin your journey to free yourself from sugar! This book (like all For Dummies books) is written in modular fashion, with each chapter pretty much standing on its own. We hope that you read through each chapter eventually (because each one contains a lot of valuable information and food for thought that you may not already know), but you certainly don’t have to read this book straight through.

Feel free to look over the table of contents so you can skip around to the topics that interest you most. In each chapter, we often direct you to other sections of the book that expand on a given subject or that give you more tips or information about the topic at hand.

For starters, we suggest that you read through Chapter 1 to get a quick overview of the major topics contained in this book — it’s short, but it gives you a taste of everything so you can figure out what you want to read about next.

If you’re ready to start making changes right away, move on to Chapter 2, where you can take the quizzes to find out which kind of sugar addict you might resemble and what some of your major motivations and mindsets may be. After you understand the whys of your sugar problem, you can flip to Chapter 9 and start working on your sugar-free lifestyle right away!

If you’d like to find out more about sugar and how it affects your body (including why it’s so addictive), spend some time on Chapters 3 and 4. If you feel like working...
