This issue of "Folia Phoniatrica et Logopaedica" is devoted to the area of dysphagia, or the evaluation and treatment of swallowing disorders. The articles included are designed to provide provocative ideas for clinicians and investigators about all aspects of the assessment and treatment of swallowing disorders. The first several papers examine issues in the diagnosis of swallowing disorders. Advantages and disadvantages of various imaging procedures applied to the assessment of swallowing are defined. The next three papers define treatment and management issues in dysphagic patients. They cover behavioural management, surgical management, and the issues involved in multidisciplinary management of the dysphagic individual, contrasting management with swallowing therapy. A paper on education in dysphagia reviews the status of education in this area in several countries, offering paradigms to improve the student's knowledge, skills and competencies in the various aspects of dysphagia management.
