John A. Hovanesian, MD is a member of the clinical faculty at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Jules Stein Eye Institute and is in private ophthalmic practice in Laguna Hills, California, with Harvard Eye Associates. He completed his undergraduate training in 3 years in the Honors Chemistry program at the University of Michigan, where he was a James B. Angell Scholar and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society as a sophomore. After graduating summa cum laude, he earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School and completed his residency training at Henry Ford Hospital, where he was named Resident of the Year and was selected by his faculty to serve as chief resident. Dr. Hovanesian then completed a 2-year fellowship in cornea and external disease at the UCLA Jules Stein Eye Institute. In his private practice in Southern California, he directs one of the country's most recognized Food and Drug Administration study centers, evaluating new eye care technologies. He serves as a board member or consultant for more than 20 eye technology companies. As the son of 2 teachers, Dr. Hovanesian enjoys contributing to ophthalmic education and serves the American Academy of Ophthalmology as editor of the Online News and Education network's cataract and anterior segment section. He is a regular contributor and member of the editorial board for Ocular Surgery News, Cataract and Refractive Surgery Today, The Premier Surgeon, Advanced Ocular Care, and Primary Care Optometry News.He blogs at www.osnsupersite.com/blog/hovanesian.aspx. In his spare time, Dr. Hovanesian enjoys spending time with his wife and 3 children. An Eagle Scout, he is also a volunteer leader with the Boy Scouts of America, serving as both cubmaster of his son's Cub Scout group and as an executive board member of the Orange County, California Council. He and his wife also teach Sunday school at his church in Costa Mesa, California.
