UNIX is a well-known and widely used computer operating system developed at Bell Laboratories. This collection of papers on new UNIX Tools was commissioned as a very special issue of Wiley's journal 'Software Practice and Experience' (there will be a further special issue on X-windows this year). None of the material will have been previously published, so although it is presented in academic journal style, it will be of particular interest to UNIX specialists, researchers and developers of operating systems interface tools and software.
