Chapter 9

(Present day)

The Darmen fleet advanced cautiously toward the large human base on Triton, which was the largest moon of the planet Neptune, the eighth planet farthest out from the system’s sun.

The Darmen planning staff had studied the results of the first Darmen-Human battle carefully and was going to take no chances this time. They were determined to not underestimate the Humans again. Besides, the Darmen Overlords had been seriously upset about the first battle, and several Darmen planners and officers had been sent to the converters. Obviously, no one wanted to be sent to the converters this time around. So, this time, the Darmen would be on high alert watching for any Human traps or subterfuges.

They also had substantially stronger forces this time. This fleet had 76 ships, consisting of one heavy cruiser, (the Flagship), 2 medium cruisers, 4 light cruisers, one medium carrier, (with 45 fighters), 20 destroyers, 39 frigates, 3 troop transports, (with 120 troopers each), and 6 freighters, (containing storage and supplies, medical bays, replacement parts and other various equipment). They figured they were loaded for just about anything. This time, the Humans would not have a chance. The Darmen wanted and needed to take this large base and use it for their own purposes, and nothing was going to stop them.

The Humans were well aware of the Darmen’s movements and intentions. It was obvious that the Darmen needed a base at the edge of the solar system and the large human base on Triton was the base that was already there. Besides, the Darmen could not allow the Humans to keep that base operational since it could be used as a jumping off point for attacks against Darmen transport and supply. So, the Humans knew the Darmen would attack the base—it was just a question of when, most likely sooner rather than later.

The Humans thought that the Darmen would use substantially stronger forces this time. It was also evident that the tech level of the Darmen was way better than the Humans. So they decided to try to stop the Darmen “at the beaches” by using everything they had available.

They had 122 fleet ships that could get there within a reasonable amount of time that would come from 12 different countries. They also had 126 fighters that could be shipped there within the projected time frame, plus 220 troopers that could get there as well. They were also going to install over 500 missiles around the base.

Timing and coordination would be paramount for this battle, so they were going to have several of their most senior admirals and generals present on the spot to command the Earth forces. They were also going to prepare for the worst-case scenario by installing self-destruct explosives in all installations, ships, fighters and troopers. They did not want the Darmen to find out much about the Humans. They decided on a total scorched-earth policy, and they were going to be ruthless about implementing it.

Every member of the Earth forces was to be made aware of the policy, their duty to implement it, and the fact that it would be ruthlessly enforced from the lowest ranking to the highest officer—especially to the highest officers, since they obviously knew the most. There would be no exceptions.

The Human fleet and fighter ships arrived in the vicinity of Triton and took up predetermined positions on the opposite side of Triton. They went to extreme low power, maximum camouflage, and used directional signal transmissions for communication. Engineers placed and dug in the missile silos all around the base, but at good distances from the base itself.

All equipment and personnel were evacuated, and basic level robots were used to operate all the base functions, including the blasters, shields and standard missile batteries.

The Humans were going to use a defense in-depth strategy, with multiple levels of offense and defense. They did not want to let the Darmen take the base, but if they did take it, all they would get would be a radioactive crater, and they would pay a terrible price for their efforts.

Despite all their tech shortcomings, the Humans had the advantages of fighting on the defensive, having numerous preexisting facilities and bases throughout the Sol system, knowing their own system much better than the Darmen, and fighting for their own families, loved ones and homeland. They could dig in and force the Darmen to try and dig them out. Maybe they would be dug out eventually, but the Humans intended to make it very costly and time-consuming for their enemies.

Meanwhile, the Humans were going to a full war alert and war production effort. Their war material might not have been as good as the Darmen’s, but there were a lot of Humans, and they could produce a lot of stuff. Also, the Humans started the process of digging in everywhere, all over their home planet of Earth as well as throughout the solar system, especially on Mars and the asteroids. They also moved all their production facilities as much as possible underground, as well as shelters for their people. And they dispersed and diversified all their military production, sending much manpower, supplies and equipment to be dug into the asteroids, and hidden there as much as possible.

The Human leaders and military planners wanted to buy as much time as possible in order to give humanity time to dig in and prepare for total war, because this Human-Darmen conflict was going to be a very long and ruthless fight.

The Human military commanders knew their job was to slow the Darmen down, and they knew it would be expensive, especially in ships, bases, equipment and lives. But survival is not cheap. Sometimes it is very costly—and in this case, it would be very expensive indeed. There would be a lot of blood, sweat and tears in the fight to come, and a lot of casualties and death. And that would just be the way it would be. The idea that there wouldn’t be casualties was just plain wishful thinking.

As the Darmen fleet approached the Human Triton base, the Darmen commander split his fleet into two parts. One part slowed and held back as a reserve, while the other attack portion moved closer to the base. The Darmen sensors detected that the base was on high alert, the Human shields were at full strength and the Human weapons systems were armed and targeting his ships. He ordered the attack portion of his fleet to proceed to attack and they opened fire and launched their missiles.

Most of the Darmen missiles and blasters targeted offensive and defensive Human installations surrounding the base, while the Human missiles and blasters fired upon the Darmen attack ships in reply. There were a lot more Human weapons than Darmen ships, but the Darmen shields and weaponry were much superior to Human weaponry. One by one, the Human positions were destroyed, but the Darmen ships were suffering substantial damage as well.

The Darmen troop transports landed their troops and they advanced toward the base, but they were met by Human troops and the land battle commenced with no quarter given or received. It was blood, blood and more blood, and it was death, death, and more death. When the energy packs for the blasters of both sides ran down, they fought with pistols. And when the pistols ran out of ammunition, they fought with knives and used their dead blasters as clubs.

It was dirty, grim, stinking, violent and vicious fighting, with no holds barred. But the Darmen had better equipment, and they slowly but surely killed many of the Human troopers one by one, and advanced toward the Human base. It became obvious that the Human troopers could not stop their attackers. There were individual acts of great heroism and courage on both sides, but the tech advantage of the Darmen was slowly grinding the Human troopers to dust.

The Humans had only used a portion of their missiles, while they allowed the Darmen attack fleet to creep closer and closer to Triton. When the Human commanders thought the time was ripe, they fired the rest of their missiles at the attack fleet. The Darmen attack fleet was savaged by the Human missiles and many of the Darmen ships were destroyed or severely damaged.

At the same time, the Human ships hidden on the rear side of Triton launched their attack on the Darmen ships. The Darmen senior commander ordered his reserve fleet in to reinforce his attack fleet, and also launched all his fighters as well. The Human commander also launched all of his fighters and the battle raged all over the surface as well as in space, near Triton.

And what a battle it was!

Darmen troopers fighting nose to nose against Human troopers, fighters weaving in and out of large fleet ships blasting at other enemy fighters and large ships, and main fleet ships blasting at one another at near point-blank range.

At one point the Darmen appeared to have gained a decided advantage since their fleet communications were superior to the Humans. The Human fleet coordination was severely hampered by the fact that their ships were from different countries, with different languages, and different command systems. The Human fleet problems were very similar to the allied ABDA naval fleet command at the beginning of WW2.

But at that critical moment, an American and Japanese fighter squadron of 12 fighters knew their duty, made their decision,...
