This ebook teaches you how to play Kpatsa, a fairly easy piece using hand drums, a bell and a rattle. You will discover hand drum techniques, what the rhythms are, and how they fit together to make an energetic ensemble. The disk contains practice recording tracks, with computer generated sound files linked to notation, showing exactly what you have to do. To give a flavour of the authentic music and dance, there is an audio recording and a video of a performance by young people in Ghana. This title is appropriate for mixed ability groups, from 8-10 years of age, with some easy and some more difficult parts. It includes background cultural information.

Trevor Wiggins is Director of Music at Dartington College of Arts, UK, and an acknowledged authority on West African music. He has been studying and playing Ghanaian drums and xylophones for more than twenty years, often with Ghanaian master drummer Johnson Kemeh (Senior Drumming Instructor, University of Ghana), and has written books and articles on the subject. Using his training as a musician and teacher, he explains in simple terms what you need to know.
