A photographic celebration of the Waitakere Ranges and the West Auckland city zones that creep up its slopes, Out West takes in some of greater Auckland's most iconic locations - from Piha and Karekare to the Manukau Harbour and the Avondale markets - and the unforgettable characters who make this a unique part of New Zealand. West Auckland and the Waitakeres are unlike anywhere else in the country - our most multi-cultural city, home of the Westie, birthplace of the wine industry, refuge for artists and eccentrics, storehouse of art and architecture. An ideal reference to the region or gift for visitors, Out West takes a fun and irreverent slant on life that is totally in keeping with the West itself.

After his 13 years as photographer on local community newspaper the Western Leader, there are not many corners of West Auckland where Chris Hoult has not delved and not many characters he hasn't photographed. Chris' photography has been exhibited widely; his previous book, Home Free, recorded the world of house trucking. He lives in Woodlands Park with his partner and his two kids, and works as freelance photojournalist when he is not out fishing or photographing somewhere in the Waitakeres .
