Antarctica: where swirling snows sweep across an icebound, empty landscape of cruel, yet unmatched beauty. However, over the years, human interference has taken its toll on Antarctica's resources. Today, humankind has realised the real value of this magnificent continent. This book provides a glimpse of the beauty of Antarctica and its wildlife and also educates since it is only through education and understanding that Antarctica stands a chance of being conserved for future generations.

After obtaining a research post at the University of Cape Town, Dr Mike Lucas was asked to be involved in South Africa's Antarctica Oceanographic Programme and was among those selected to initiate a new programme concerned with climate change. He has been involved in more than 10 research cruises to sub-antarctic islands, the Southern Ocean and the Antarctic continent and his work has received international recognition. Mike currently lives in Cape Town, although he spends several months at sea every year.
