Robert Andresen (1937 95) lived in the Duluth-Superior area and was a leading force in documenting, performing, and promoting old-time music in the Upper Midwest. Born into a musical family of Norwegian immigrants, he was a radio and record producer, festival organizer, field researcher, and most of all a skilled guitar player who drew upon his love of country and blues music, Scandinavian and Slovenian polkas and waltzes, and lumber camp fiddling to create innovative adaptations of accordion and fiddle tunes for flat-picked guitar.

This CD collects eighteen of the best tunes of the Andresen Guitar Group. Just as Southern string bands turned "hillbilly" slurs topsy-turvy, the Andresen Guitar Group artfully counters taunts that dwellers in their region's timbered hinterlands are "Jack Pine Savages."

"

The Andresen Guitar Group with Bob and his son Gary on twin lead guitars, son Tim on string bass, and sister-in-law Penny Perry on rhythm guitar performed throughout the Upper Midwest in the late 1980s and early 1990s, were featured at the Smithsonian Institution's 1991 Festival of American Folklife, and recorded three cassettes.
