A famous pirate named Wilic Ellington has disappeared, leaving behind an empty envelope, his handbook on magic, and his granddaughter Oceana Sanford. Navigating through a world that has just begun revolutionizing and modernizing technology, with the inventions of flying boats, robots, and gadgets that vows to solve any problem, the seventeen-year-old pirate in training left alone for the first time begins an investigation to find him. She and her friends, Jamlson Douglas and Headworth Williams, set out on a quest to find her grandfather. On the voyage, the three of them are confronted with enemies, life-endangering situations and for the first time are faced with the dark side of magic. Oceana soon discovers that the country they live in, Cor'Meum, has been terrorized lately by mysterious people in gas masks. There are also rumors that the evil King Sage Magnus is coming back from the dead. For some reason, her grandfather's book is the center of it all. What secrets has her grandfather hidden from her? What is in the handbook? Is Wilic's disappearance connected to something much bigger?
Cor'Meum, an industrialized world, led by the guidance of technology, and by King Erebus. It has been claimed that magic is part of the past. Robotics and machinery fill their presence in the streets of Cor'Meum; machinery such as replacing lost limbs, robots that are helpers, and giant machine boats that soar in the sky. All of this makes it easy to forget about the ancient ways of magic. While the body of Cor'Meum and military KEEPIN (Keeping, Everlasting, Extravagant, Peace in the Nation) wants to forget about magic and move towards this modern industrialized world, it later becomes apparent that behind closed doors magic may be more involved with Cor'Meum than what the people are lead to believe. A Pirates' Handbook to Magic is a coming-of-age story about transgressing away from nationalism and blind allegiance, and entering self-discovery. Oceana Sanford, throughout her whole life, has dedicated her allegiance to her country, Cor'Meum while growing up with her grandfather, a famous navy captain, or "e;Pirate."e; When her grandfather leaves unexpectedly, and on her own for the first time, she begins to discover the truth about Cor'Meum; a secret that the country desperately tries to hide. Setting out to find her missing grandfather, she begins to find herself. Because Oceana Sanford was raised on a pirate ship, she is trained in the art of sword fighting, a skill that saves her life from her enemies throughout the book. She uses her sword to escape dangerous situations and to fight those who want her dead. Oceana's talent for sword fighting has even proven to be a threat to her old rival, The King's daughter Aster Rosario. Despite being discouraged by her seeming inability to perform magic, Oceana can't help but want to learn about the hidden world of magic. After taking her grandfather's personal handbook on magic, and discovering its use of it up close, Oceana's love for magic and desire to learn magic grows. Oceana along with the readers will learn about the system of magic the world has to offer and the personality types that fit with each set of magic, along with the limits that magic has. Oceana can not do this journey alone, she gains help from her childhood best friend Jamlson Douglas; the librarian's son Headworth Williams and his robot TOAD. Together the four of them navigate the world of technology and magic, searching for the person who wrote the letter to Oceana's grandfather. All while faced with rumors about the evil king, Sage Magnus, and how he is coming back from the dead to get his revenge on Cor'Meum. This book is perfect for those who have or are currently struggling with family identity vs their own self-identity. This also plays a bigger theme in the world that Oceana Sanford lives in. The world around her is transitioning away from magic and entering the era of technology, forcing a struggle among the people. Who would want to fit into which side? This story is full of twists and turns so buckle up and enjoy the ride!

Chapter 2:

The boy in the woods

The girl traveled along the dirt road, marching along the sea of trees. The trees held leaves of splashing colors such as brown, amber, and gold. Each crisping apart off the wooden branch they had once called home. The tree was to become naked, in preparation for the next season. The sounds of animals surrounded her, each vocalizing their own melody to a song. A bird repeated its chirp from one of the nearby trees, and sang its happy carol.

She reached a long patch of water that guided itself around the wooden area. The water gently made its way along the narrow path, and splashed playfully against the rocks that rested there. Oceana jumped on one of the bigger rocks, creating a small splash when she had landed. She moved her leg out on the rock and rested her foot on the other stone that was comparatively smaller than the one she was on. She moved forward and rested in her new water-free area. Closer to the other side of the shallow river, she felt confident enough to jump to the patch of land in front of her. After a hop, she landed on her feet, causing the ground underneath her to splash the wet dirt upwards, allowing some of the muck to land on her black boots. A small loss, but nevertheless, she trotted forward up the narrow hill by the water, and advanced back to her journey.

A couple of miles down the woods, she finally reached her destination. A small house that rested quite peacefully in the world of these trees. Half of the tiny home was cemented with a white wall, filled with cracks that could count more years than the date it was built. The other half was made up of bricks that were placed nicely, much like a puzzle. However, the reliability of these bricks staying together was a different story. The brick chimney that rested on the far back corner of the home had puffs of gray smoke that escaped its hold, which led them to believe that someone was home.

They made their way to the front door and knocked, hoping they would not break the wooden door that moved dangerously forward with each tap. She heard movements from the inside, along with clashing of what she would guess were pots and pans. The noise created inside had finally presented itself when the front door opened.

A taller boy who had a dark complexion, and hair that was in long tangles, stood in front of her. Whatever he had been doing today, he looked tired, evidence showed from the bags of circles under his eyes. When he laid his eyes on them, the amount of stress he was going through had hit its tipping point.

He looked at her, narrowed his eyebrows, rolled his eyes before he took a step back, and began to close the door on them. He was not ready to continue the day with her existence near him.

“Jamlson!” She shouted out. Attempting to jog his memory that she was not a threat, just a friend! But the shout, for some strange reason, hadn’t improved his attitude towards her.

“What?” He sounded sharp; he stopped his process. “What do you want?” He positioned the door to welcome space again, though its acceptance for any company seemed very limited. “Didn’t I tell you to write me a letter before you visit? To prepare? It’s really inconvenient when you have surprise visits.” He said.

“I know and I’m sorry, but this is important!” Oceana racked up their thoughts before they had begun to speak to the boy. “I believe something bad is happening!”

“So?” He raised his eyebrow and crossed his arms in the process, not necessarily seeming like he cared about conflicting dangers.

“So!” She shouted; she paused for a moment, no response came. This was when she believed she should continue. “So I need your help!”

Jamlson rolled his eyes and retreated back into the comfort of his home, Oceana tailed along behind him. She followed him while he made his way down the hall. At some point, her back pressed against the wall, this was due to the tiny space between the hallway and a wooden desk. On top of the wooden desk, Oceana spotted a pile of books that she knew were not Cor’Meum approved. How many of these books had Jamlson read since the last time she had seen him? Oceana wanted to say something about reading such books, but she decided to bite her lip instead.

Once inside the kitchen, that could hold a total of three adults, and if lucky, a small child, he began to go back to work, chopping away the large pile of different types of fruit. “Why?” he asked, keeping his attention on the product in front of him.

“There has been a situation,” Oceana stated.

“A situation?”

“Yes!”

“What kind of situation?”

“A bad one!” Oceana ran her fingers through her bangs. She wanted to sound determined, to get to him. “A really, really, bad one.” She corrected herself; perhaps adding a second really would get his attention. Of course, one ‘really’ usually meant it was terrible, but adding double the amount should get him to understand that this was an emergency.

Jamlson moved the chopped berries into a small bag and placed them gently on the desk behind him, among other similar-looking bags. Then, he turned back and began hacking the berries again. “If this situation is so bad, why not ask your grandpa for help?”

“That’s the thing!” Oceana shifted herself closer to him, breaking the rules of personal space. “He- he is missing.” She felt she said that dramatically, but she needed to get to him.

Jamlson stopped and put the knife down to look at her. He used this opportunity to put a bit of space between them and stepped back.

“How long has he been missing?”

“Errr,” She paused, knowing that the information she would tell him would not present itself to be a dire situation. “A day.”

“A day? Oceana, how do you even know he is missing? He could have just-” He waved his hand momentarily in the sky, “gone out.”

“Impossible.”

“Why is that?” Jamlson raised an eyebrow.

It was her turn to take a step back. She ran her fingers once more through her white hair, which had decided from birth that it would remain frosted, almost as if she had already lived a lifetime.

“Well, we have never been apart, at least not like this.” She hesitated before she continued to speak. “My grandpa acted weird before he left.”

“How?”

She paused and thought about her grandfather’s strange behaviors. “We were at this village, and he had gotten this letter.” She moved toward her pocket. “It had a strange wax seal, one I had never seen before.” She then handed the envelope to Jamlson; he took it carefully and examined it. “He read the letter that came with that.”

“Do you have the letter?”

“No. I never got the chance to read it.”

“What happened?”

“Um,” Oceana stated; she stepped back from Jamlson, to move in circles, trying not to bump her hips against the counter. “He got this letter, and then after reading it, he said it was time to leave the hotel we were at, even though we were in the middle of doing a KEEPIN job there!”

“He said that right away?”

“Yes.” She stopped her pacing. “He said that right after he read the letter with that envelope.”

“Weird.”

“Right! I thought it was strange, too, I mean, he never abandons his post. He is always saying that.” She switched her pitch of voice to sound deeper, similarly to how her grandpa sounds. “We gotta stick to KEEPIN guidelines, they are important and-”

“Oceana continue.”

“Oh, sorry, right.” She moved the medium length hair to the back of her ears. This gave her time to think. “Well, right after I packed my belongings that night and we got on Ol’Sarah.”

“Ol’Sarah?”

“The boat!” She corrected herself, “We got on her five weeks earlier than we were supposed to.” She folded her arms. “After that, my Grandpa locked himself in the captain’s cabin for the rest of the three nights on the deck. He didn’t even bother making me do my sword training exercises!” Oceana snapped her fingers, “I never went so long without doing training- or being yelled at to do so.” Oceana crossed her arms.

“Did he ever explain why you two were coming home so early?”

“No. He never spoke a word to me.” She gave a sigh. “By the time we got to the port, the crew on the boat started it up again, preparing for it to leave without us.”

“Has that happened before?”

“No. Never, we are always on Ol’Sarah when she is moving.” Oceana waved her hand. “Anyways, we went to the house; my Grandpa said goodnight, the only thing he had said to me after we got off. Well then I went to bed, and when I woke up today, he was gone! Now I am here.” She threw her arms up. “I-’’ She had stopped in her words, she gave her toes a click before she turned herself away from him, “I had no idea who to go to.” Her statement came out crooked. She turned around and looked at the boy’s brown eyes. “I am lost.”

Jamlson raised his eyebrow and curled his lips, moving his attention to the counter that held the remaining untouched berries. He picked up his knife and resumed his chopping activity. “I wish I could help you, but I have to take care of the family business and continue to make sales here. My mom needs my help.” He moved his focus back on the berries.

Though the answer he had given...
