CHAPTER TWO
Renewing Your Mind
to a New Identity
Now that you’ve accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior and have been engrafted into the family of Almighty God, what’s the next step? On your new journey, you will learn how to become a true child of God, a follower and disciple of our Lord Jesus Christ. This journey cannot be completed on your own; you have received the Holy Spirit (the spirit of the living God), and He will help you. The Holy Spirit’s purpose is to help us to become like Jesus Christ here on earth and complete the will of Father God. You are renewing your mind from the world knowledge of the kingdom of darkness and learning how to walk in the true light and faith (the reality of the supernatural) of the kingdom of God, here on earth.
Don’t worry, this process will not happen overnight. The Holy Spirit meets everyone at their own level of faith and spiritual maturity. It’s the Holy Spirit’s responsibility to help you and me to become more like Jesus Christ here on earth. As we grow spiritually, we become more and more the image of Jesus Christ every day. Praise God! Don’t feel as though you are not doing what you are supposed to. The Holy Spirit will help, guide, and teach you everything, from the word of God, (the Holy Bible).
Foundation Scripture:
Romans 12:1–2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. (2) And do not be (conformed) to this world but be (transformed) by the (renewing) of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
(voc.) Transformed: To change the natural disposition and temper of man from a state of enmity to God and His law, into the image of God, or into a disposition and temper conformed to the will of God. (American Dictionary of the English Language Noah Webster 1828)
(voc.) Conformed: Rather than being squeezed into this world’s mold, the Christian is to undergo an inward transformation, through which outward appearance and character also become Christlike. God fully intends to do His work of grace within us. Without robbing us of our individuality, He will not leave us as we are. (New International Encyclopedia of Bible words, p. 185)
(voc.) Renewing: “A renewal,” is used in Romans 12:2, the renewing (of your mind),” i.e., the adjustment of the moral and spiritual vision and thinking to the mind of God, which is designed to have a transforming effect upon the life. (Vine’s Complete Expository Dictionary, p. 524)
Foundation Scripture:
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a (new creation); old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
New Creation/Creature
God’s purpose for redeeming us is to change us into the likeness of His Son Jesus Christ, with the help of His Holy Spirit. We are no longer the person we used to be before accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. We are not accountable for the acts (sins) before accepting Jesus but are now forgiven and considered justified. We are redeemed (purchased) by the precious blood of Jesus and born of the Spirit of God Himself. The Holy Spirit of God will help guide us through this transformation of becoming like Jesus Christ Himself and walking as true sons of God.
(voc.) Redemption: The purchase of God’s favor by the death and suffering of Christ; the ransom or deliverance of sinners from the bondage of sin and the penalties of God’s violated law by the atonement of Christ. (American Dictionary of the English Language Noah Webster 1828)
(voc.) Redemption: The release “from all wickedness” (Titus 2:14). The redemption that Jesus accomplished by His blood is an eternal redemption (Hebrews 9:12) intended to cleanse us that “we may serve the living God.” (New International Encyclopedia of Bible Words, p. 517)
(voc.) New creation: Born of the Spirit of God Himself, to being a new man with a new character of manhood, spiritual and moral, after the pattern of Christ. (Vine’s Complete Expository Dictionary, p. 431)
Through faith in Jesus Christ, human beings themselves discover a realm of life in which all things become new (2 Corinthians 5:17). These new creations wrought by Christ Himself live as new people, God’s renewed humanity. (Galatians 6:15; Ephesians 4:24) (New International Encyclopedia of Bible Words)
We are said to now be God’s very own workmanship in Christ. We are called a peculiar people.
• Romans 8:14–16 for as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God. (15) for you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” (16) The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.
• Ephesians 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
• 1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, his own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.
The first step to renewing your mind is that you can no longer see yourself as the old you but learn to see yourself as God sees you, a true child of His, in Jesus Christ.
The second step is to start reading the Bible daily and attend a word-based church. The Holy Bible is the truth, which is the Spirit of God in the written format. It is the only truth in existence. Your walk/ journey in God’s kingdom here on earth is directed primarily by the word of God and through the revelation given by the Holy Spirit. Praise God!
• Ephesians 4:22–24 That regarding your previous way of life, you put off your old self [completely discard your former nature], which is being corrupted through deceitful desires. (23) and be continually renewed in the spirit of your mind [having a fresh, untarnished mental and spiritual attitude], (24) and will put on the new self [the regenerated and renewed nature], created in God’s image, [godlike] in the righteousness and holiness of the truth [living in a way that express to God your gratitude for your salvation]. (Amplified Bible Classic)
(voc.) Righteousness: Purity of heart and rectitude of life; being and doing right. As an attribute of God, it is united with His holiness as being essential in His nature. (The New Unger’s Bible Dictionary, p. 1081)
Because of our original parents’ (Adam and Eve) sinful nature, all of mankind has fallen short of God’s glory, and in God’s eyes, we are unclean. Before we gave our lives and accepted Jesus Christ as Lord, our prayers were not heard. We could not enter the holy of holies before God. Our Lord Jesus’s substitutionary death on our behalf was justified by Father God Himself. So now, the sins that we had before Christ’s crucifixion are no longer held against us in the sight of God. Through Jesus Christ, we are not condemned by past sins, because our sins have been wiped away and are to be remembered no more. Through faith, we (children of God) are acquitted and justified. So now when Father God sees us, He sees us through the blood of His Son, Jesus Christ.
• Romans 8:1 there is therefore now no (condemnation) to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
(voc.) Condemnation: The declaring of an evildoer to be guilty. (The New Unger’s Bible Dictionary, p. 252)
(voc.) Condemnation: The act of condemning; the judicial act of declaring one guilty and dooming him to punishment. (American Dictionary of the English Language Noah Webster 1828)
(voc.) Justification: Is a divine act whereby an infinitely Holy God judicially declares a believing sinner to be righteous and acceptable before him because Christ has borne the sinner’s sin on the cross and has become “to us . . . righteousness.” (The New Unger’s Bible Dictionary, p. 729)
• Galatians 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.
• Romans 3:23–24 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, (24) being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ...
