Investigative Journalism in Africa is a window into the murky world of Africa’s democratic watchdogs, telling the story of perseverance in the face of ubiquitous threats, imprisonment, and harassment through the eyes of ten celebrated African investigative journalists.

The book answers the profound questions of 'why' and 'how' African investigative journalists, as frontline reporters, do the work they do in the face of overwhelming adversities. It sheds light on the lives of Africa’s best muckrakers and casts new light on the motivations that drive them—against all odds and adversities.

Divided into ten chapters, Alvin Ntibinyane first provides a brief overview and historical context of investigative journalism in Africa. He then identifies five motivating factors that drive African investigative journalists before focusing on behind-the-scenes vignettes chronicling the experiences of four leading African muckrakers. These biographical sketches explore the contexts within which they work, focusing on their daily struggles, hopes, and fears. The book is enriched with pictures, newspaper cuttings, and other illustrations to complement the text.

Alvin Ntibinyane co-founded INK Foundation – a southern African-based nonprofit news outlet. He was a former newspaper editor, before completing a research fellowship at the University of Oxford in the UK. He was part of the Pulitzer Prize-winning team that worked on the Panama Papers.
