Along the Way is unique among contemporary Camino publications in that it is part travelogue, part literary review, and part cultural commentary. Readers can follow Robert France's own pilgrimage along his "namesake road" through focused and succinct excerpts from his journal that are accompanied by numerous photographs. The book also provides the first interpretation of the prevalent themes--adventure, joy, contact, and contemplation--covered in the published literature of modern Camino accounts. Finally, the book undertakes the first illumination of the modern cultural phenomena of the Camino through surveying the zeitgeist of the Way.

Robert Lawrence France is an associate professor of watershed management in the department of environmental sciences in the faculty of agriculture at Dalhousie University and a science advisor to the Center of Technology and the Environment at Harvard University. He is the author of more than a dozen books, including The Handbook of Landscape Regenerative Development and Design; The Handbook of Water Sensitive Planning and Design; Ultreia! Onward! Progress of the Pilgrim; Veniceland Atlantis: The Bleak Future of the World's Favorite City; and Wetlands of Mass Destruction: Ancient Presage for Contemporary Ecocide in Southern Iraq. He lives in Truro, Nova Scotia.
